Tina Simms - Owner, Studio Director, Teacher, and Choreographer
Entering the dance world at the age of 4, Tina trained in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary dance, hip-hop, and acrobatics. At Stage Door Studio in Pennsylvania, she was a member of the competition team, performing team, and set choreography. She performed in the Nutcracker with the Repertory Dance Company from 1988 to 1991. In 1990, she was accepted into the Joffrey Ballet Company summer program. In 1993, Tina began her teaching career at Dance Design Studio, in Easton Pennsylvania until 2002, when she returned to instruct at her childhood studio, Stage Door Studio. In 2004, Tina moved to Expression of Dance in Nazareth, where she taught and choreographed for the award winning Allegro Ballet Company, Impressions Lyrical/Contemporary and Jazz Company, and Dynamite Lyrical/Contemporary and Jazz Company, until she relocated to Asheville in 2009. Tina attended numerous classes and workshops in New York City including Steps, and Broadway Dance Center, with many wonderful teachers including: Frank Hatchett, Mia Michaels, Savion Glover, Mary Ann Lamb, Gus Giordano, Bob Rizzo, Pamela Bolling, Wade Robson, Dena Rizzo, Shane Sparks, Tracie Stanfield, and Chris Judd.
She received additional instructor training from the Dance Teacher Summer Conference, and BDC Teacher Intensive, as well as, the Pulse, the Wild, Showstopper, Jump, Excel, and Conquest workshops. Currently, Tina is working toward her Dance Master's certification.
Tina's competitive groups, solos, and duets have won numerous awards, including "Outstanding Choreography" for her pieces: Hometown Glory, and Falling Slowly. Her students have won scholarships and special awards from many competitions, such as: Starquest, Showstoppers, Nexstar, Lehigh Valley Dance Alliance, Starpower, Startalent, Headliners, and Conquest. Also, Tina's competitive groups were selected to perform in Disney World in 2007.
In addition to studio work, Tina performed and choreographed for multiple community theater productions, which include: Cabaret, Dames at Sea, Brigadoon, 42nd Street, and The Music Man. She also choreographed and participated in Murder Mystery Dinner Theater.
Now in her new home of Asheville, North Carolina, Tina is proud to offer excellent technical and artistic training in her own dance studio. Her goal is to build a nurturing environment for students to grow into confident artists and inspiring individuals. At WNC Dance Academy, Tina, along with her carefully selected, highly trained, professional staff, will provide the tools and training necessary for those interested in a professional career, and a rewarding experience for those who just love to dance.
